The Department held its annual awards banquet for the year 2018 at the Old High School. Assistant Chief Brandon Moore and Captain Randy Sturgill welcomed the department members and their families. He then recognized distinguished guests Mayor Gary Heninger, Town Manager John Clark, Town Council members Donna Blevins, Bill Clear, Brent Foster, Allen Counts, Clerk Treasurer Marlene Henderson and Chilhowie Police Sergeant Perry.
New members Firefighter/Paramedic Austin Mason (returning member) and Firefighter/EMT Scott Schumaker were recognized. Firefighter Mason and Firefighter Schumaker were also awarded the Educational Achievement Ribbon Awards. Lieutenant Jeannie Haynes was the recipient of the Firefighter Attendance Ribbon. Firefighter/EMT-I Alex Taschereau was recognized for completing the EMT-Intermediate course. Assistant Chief Brandon Moore, Captain Randy Sturgill, Lieutenant Jenna Ruffin, Firefighter Hunter Ruffin and Firefighter Austin Mason were recognized as instructors of the first Smyth County Fire & Rescue Academy (Firefighter I & II Course) . Dinner then followed the ceremony.
